I know the BBC announced this a while ago, but I just want to say how happy I was when I heard that Luther would be returning to our screens.
(Luther – Opening Title Sequence – BBC One)
Luther is a crime drama about a brilliant yet highly-strung detective who has just returned to work after a suspension. The show has a variety of memorable characters including a beautiful sociopath, a crazy ex-soldier, dodgy police officers and the lead character John Luther, played wonderfully by Idris Elba from The Wire.
Ah, The Wire! Apparently, there are two kinds of people in this world: those who haven’t seen The Wire, and the rest of us who feel really sorry for you!
The Wire was an excellent American crime series created by David Simon. Some say it was the best TV series ever made. *sigh*
Anyway, back to Luther. It consisted of 6 episodes and each one was excellent. Luther is like a modern-day Sherlock Holmes who can see things that his colleagues miss. He gets emotionally involved with the criminals, and as standard with TV detectives nowadays, he is always taking risks. He has a dark side though, and this is evident in the very first episode.
I’m really looking forward to the seeing him back in a second series. For those of you who haven’t seen the first series, check out the trailer below.
